Before starting the updating process you should read the preparation info below:
  • use this post only for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 4G model.
    – do not attempt to update any other devices with the files that you will find in this post.
    – your device’s model number is SM – T535 and it can be checked by going to Settings> About Device.
    – if the tablet model that’s listed is different from T535 then this guide is not going to work.

    – with the drivers installed you will be able to successfully connect your tablet to your PC.
  • ODIN is the application that you will have to use in order to flash the updates files on your Galaxy Tab 4.
  • make sure that you don’t have any antivirus app running nor the Samsung KIES program.
    – these apps are going to block ODIN from running on your device.
  • enable USB Debugging from Developer Options menu.
    – if Developer Options is not displayed under Settings, then you have to enable it first.
    – go to Settings> About Device and tap 7 times on the Build Number section to unlock developer settings.
    – go back to Settings, scroll down and open Developer Options.
    – find the USB Debugging and activate it.
  • in you are installing this new official firmware on a rooted tablet, then the update will revoke root access, but you won’t lose any data in the process.
    – the custom Recovery, if there is one installed, will be replaced by a Stock Samsung Recovery Mode.
  • if you are installing the Android 5.0.2 XXU1BOD8 firmware over a custom ROM, then you should know that you will be forced to apply an extra ‘factory reset’ step.
    – the ‘factory reset’ will remove the old ROM completely and it will allow the new official firmware to boot in normal mode.
    – ‘factory reset’ steps are listed at the end of this post and you can apply them after the update is complete.
    – ‘factory reset’ is not going to delete any data from internal nor external storage.
  • if you are installing the Android 5.0.2 update over a custom ROM, then you need to know that the flashing process is not going to wipe any files from internal nor external storage.
  • read the entire post, don’t skip any steps and you should complete the update in no time.
  • this guide is for advanced users, we cannot be held responsible if you lose data nor in case you brick the device in the process.
  • check the battery power level of your device and make sure that it is over 50%, it prevents the device from powering down during installation.
Now that you know all of the above you can continue to the next part of this post and learn how to flash a brand new official OTA update on your tablet.

How to flash Android 5.0.2 XXU1BOD8 OTA Update manually for Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 4G T535:

  1. Download the XXU1BOD8 Android firmware zip from here.
  2. Extract the archived contents and save them on your PC.
    – after the extraction is complete you should obtain the update firmware file with a tar.md5 file extension.
    – don’t extract that tar.md5 archive, save it on your PC.
  3. Download Odin3 v3.09 from here.
    – extract the archived zip contents.
  4. Power off your device.
  5. Next, launch Odin exe on your PC.
  6. Put the tablet in Download Mode.
    – it can be done by pressing Volume Down, Home and Power all at the same time until the Download Mode menu loads.
  7. Connect your tablet to your PC via USB Cable and wait for Odin to detect the device.
    – if the tablet is not recognized you will be forced to re-install the Samsung USB drivers and then boot Download Mode again.
    – if everything is set, then you should continue with the installation.
  8. Click on the ‘AP’ button in ODIN to browse for the Android 5.0.2 XXU1BOD8 firmware tar.md5 file.
  9. Load the file in ODIN.
    – make sure that the ‘re-partition’ option is not enabled and then continue.
  10. Press START to begin Android 5.0.2 XXU1BOD8 update for your Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 tablet.
    – wait until the installation is complete without pressing any buttons.
  11. After the updating process is complete you will see the tablet rebooting in normal mode.
    – note that the first boot process of this new ROM is going to take 10-15 minutes before it loads all the new files.
  12. Use your usual login info in order to unlock your device and then start testing all the new things added by Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.
These were all the steps that you had to take in order to complete the update. If you’ve encountered any problems check the extra notes below.
NOTE 1:
If ODIN app freezes or it shows the Fail alert, then you will have to repeat the entire tutorial more than once. Start with the guidelines above the tutorial and make sure that your tablet meets all requirements before repeating the installation. If you think that you’ve stumbled upon a more complex problem, then feel free to let us know in comments.
NOTE 2:
If ODIN tells you that the update was passed, but it is unable to boot in normal mode then you will most likely need to apply an extra ‘factory reset’ step. This factory reset step will have to be applied by those that have installed Android 5.0.2 official firmware over a custom ROM too.
Factory Reset only deletes data from system memory partition, it won’t remove any files from internal nor external storage. Here’s how to apply the factory reset for your Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 4G device:
  • power off the tablet completely.
  • boot it in Recovery Mode.
    – it can be done by pressing and holding Volume Up, Home and Power at the same time.
    – release the buttons when the main Recovery options are listed.
  • select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ option.
  • confirm the factory reset.
  • reboot your tablet in normal mode after the process is done.
